FORTY-somethings who could have been the last to leave school at 14 are getting together this weekend to catch up with how they fared over the years.

They will be attending a school reunion to swap news, relive the heady days of their youth and spend a nostalgic evening indulging in old times.

The group all attended the Felixstowe Middle School and High School from 1967 and are all around 45 years old.

Their final years of education spanned the changes to the school leaving age which was raised from 14 to 16, and in the late 1960s and until 1971, people could still leave at such a tender age if they had a job or apprenticeship lined up.

The reunion is being held at Deben High School, Garrison Lane, Felixstowe, on Saturday at 7.30pm – and tickets are still available.

Reunion organiser Elizabeth Backhouse (nee Clark) said the middle school had been what is now Orwell High, and Deben – at one time a grammar school – had been the high school.

"We last held a reunion about five years ago and we had about 120 people attend and it was great fun. It just went on and on and no-one wanted to go home – we eventually left about 2am," she said.

"People are thrilled that we are doing it again and are very excited about this weekend. We are really looking forward to it."

At the last reunion it was found that many people from the school year had stayed local – but even so many of them had not seen each other for years or knew what had happened to their friends.

"There was a lot of catching up to do and a lot of friendships renewed," said Mrs Backhouse, of High Road West, Felixstowe.

Tickets for the evening are £7.50, including a disco and buffet and can be obtained from Mrs Backhouse on 01394 275423 or her co-organiser Mary Butler (nee McCarthy) on 01394 671983. There will be some tickets available on the door on the night.
