The students, named Black Ice, started their project in September last year, and were one of 45 teams nationwide to compete in the downhill race at Wicksteed Theme Park in Kettering, Northamptonshire.

The team finished third out of the 45 teams, and is now planning a return next year where they hope to finish even higher.

Teacher Dan Sheldrick said: “Technically it was a soap box challenge. Our technician Andy Taylor came up with the idea.

“He got some old parts together from a previous project at his old school and we built the car with our level three students.

“I think the project showed our students that you can get results but you have to put in the hard work. They worked outside of lessons over nine months and came third. I’m very proud of their efforts.”
