AN OPEN day will take place at Suffolk College next month to highlight research undertaken on stammering.

Suffolk College, along with the University of East Anglia, carries out research in memory of a Holbrook man who took his life because of his stammer.

Dominic Barker struggled to get a job because of problems with his speech and eventually shot himself in 1994.

His parents, who live in Pound Close, Holbrook, were determined Dominic's life would not be in vain and set up The Dominic Barker Trust, known as Dom's Fund, to help pay for research into the condition.

Today, 11 years on, that research is continuing and Dom's Fund is helping to fund vital research into stammering.

At an open day at Suffolk College, interested parties will be able to learn of this research.

There will also be speeches from Jon Smith and Jaik Campbell.

Helen Barker, Dominic's mum, said: “Both of the speakers have stammers.

“Jon Smith is well-known in the football transfer world and Jaik Campbell is a young man who has done stand-up shows and has been in the Edinburgh Festival. They are both good speakers.

“We have had a researcher based at the college and they have been very supportive.

“We have been connected with the college for about eight years.”

Students will provide a buffet supper at the event which will take place from 7pm on November 9.
