Stalls selling yuletide food, drink, decorations and presents are lining the streets of the town centre, as well as a bar, hot food stands, and even a funfair.

The market is covering Princes Street and Giles Square. The regular Cornhill Market is also out in force.

Mark Whiting, operations manager - commercial development, Ipswich Borough Council, said: “We put on the Ipswich Christmas Market every year. We have got stalls selling presents through to a full food court and a fun fair. There is something for everyone and we are hoping for some festive weather over the weekend.

“It’s now an expected fixture in the events programme. It’s a nice event to have at the end of the year, right in the middle of the town centre. It links with the standard market that’s on a Friday and a Saturday. It’s nice to have all the decorations up and have a festive feel.

“Sometimes you can’t beat shopping outdoors. I know some people have to brave the weather to do it but they sometimes get the best possible prices when they are face-to-face with people.

“It’s a great opportunity for local producers and suppliers to put their products out. We work very closely with them to make sure that they are local suppliers.

“It’s difficult times for people but we hope that the prices on offer here are that bit more competitive in a market place. People can therefore buy for their money.”

Melanie Jepson, of Ryan Jepson Cheeses, which travelled from its base in Halifax, said: “We do a lot of Christmas markets and we just the love atmosphere that they generate.”
