AN Ipswich paedophile who had sex with a 13-year-old girl and collected a huge library of child pornography has been jailed for five years.

Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Nicholas Gregory, took photographs of a five-year-old girl in erotic poses and downloaded thousands of other sexual images of children from his computer.

Among the worst pornographic pictures the 35-year-old downloaded were people having sex with babies and a film of an eight-year-old boy raping a six-year-old girl.

Judge Peter Thompson, at Ipswich Crown Court, said: "These were sadistic and painful activities for the children involved. I need not spell out the gross unpleasantness of all these images."

The majority of the pictures were at level one and two, the least serious, but almost 200 were at levels three and four and five were at the most serious level five.

Gregory, of Apsley Court, Wellington Street, initially denied the offences stating that he was "flabbergasted" by the allegation from the teenage girl, he later admitted having sexual intercourse with.

Gregory pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the 13-year-old girl and to taking indecent photographs of her. He also admitted taking indecent pictures of a five-year-old girl.

Out of the 2,327 pornographic images of children the police discovered on Gregory's three computers the child molester admitted 38 sample offences.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing indecent pictures of children, many of which were contained within a carrier bag of cds.

Rupert Overbury, prosecuting, said Gregory used his girlfriend's credit card to access child porn websites to avoid detection by police. He said when Gregory was arrested he denied finding the pictures "erotic" and stated that he found them "disgusting and horrifying".

Judge Thompson said he believed Gregory had started viewing and downloading child pornography then started taking his own pictures of children then actually carried out activities with the 13-year-old girl.

He said: "She was a vulnerable girl who was very unhappy and seeking attention and you exploited her for your own sexual gratification. You became more dangerous to young girls as time moved on."

Ailsa Williamson, mitigating, said Gregory, who was of previous good character, would find any jail sentence difficult because of his incurable disease.

Judge Thompson jailed Gregory for five years but extended his licence on release by three years. He said he wanted the probation service to "keep an eye on him".

After the hearing Sergeant Chris Cushnahan, said: "We were hopeful that he would get a minimum of five years."

Sgt Cushnahan added paedophiles like Gregory have always been in our community but now the police force have the means to catch them.
