CRIES of joy erupted around the court room today as former teacher and band leader Derek Cable was convicted as a paedophile and jailed for four years.
The 63 year-old Stowmarket man stood expressionless as a jury at Norwich Crown Court returned a total of 18 guilty verdicts against him after more than four hours of deliberation.
Shouts of "Yes" were heard from the public gallery which was packed with some of Cable's victims and their families.
Judge Paul Downes sentenced Cable to four years for each offence of indecent assault and 18 months for each offence of gross indecency, all of which will run concurrently.
He said it was clear from the trial that Cable had "groomed" his victims.
Judge Downes said: "Cigarettes, alcohol and in one case cash were used to groom your victims for you own particular purpose".
Cable was also ordered to sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life and barred from working with children ever again.
After the case some of Cable's victims spoke of their delight at the verdict. For the full story see tomorrow's Evening Star.
