A PARAMEDIC had to be cut free from his ambulance after he was trapped following a collision with a van on his way to an emergency call.

The man was freed by firefighters after the accident, which happened shortly before 7pm in Lowestoft Road, Reydon near Southwold.

The Honda four-wheel drive paramedic vehicle was answering an emergency call at the time and an ambulance spokesman said the vehicle had a blue light flashing and siren on.

The paramedic vehicle was travelling towards Southwold and was in collision with a Vauxhall Corsa van.

A second ambulance was requested to continue with the original emergency call out.

A further ambulance was called to the scene of the accident and the male paramedic and the female van driver were both taken to James Paget Hospital, Gorleston.

The van driver suffered minor injuries including a small cut to the head and the paramedic suffered lower body injuries, a Suffolk police spokesman said.

The road was blocked and local diversions were set up to allow emergency services to deal with the accident.

A spokesman for the East Anglian Ambulance service confirmed one of its units had been involved in a road accident and an ambulance driver was receiving treatment in hospital.
