IPSWICH: The town’s Bury Road park and ride service is set to close in January – driven to oblivion by the recession and cheap town centre parking.

The county council, which runs the service, blamed the borough’s decision to allow dozens of temporary car parks to spring up on empty land for the decision to abandon the service.

County councillor with responsibility for transport Guy McGregor said the park and ride network was a drain on the county’s resources and there was no prospect of it breaking even.

He said: “The fact is that if you have lots of car parks springing up in the town centre charging 2 for all-day parking what incentive is there for using park and ride?”
