A CYCLIST from East Anglia has today set his sights on taking part in the Special Olympics in Beijing in 2008.

Adrian Bassett, 27, from Eye, a former pupil at the Thomas Wolsey School in Ipswich, emerged from a regional heat of national cycling trials with two gold medals and one silver.

Now he is set to take part in the national finals in Scotland on July 2 and is hoping to win a place in the British team and the chance to fly to China in three years' time.

Mr Bassett, who communicates by sign language and suffers from low muscle tone, can often be seen out on his cycle on the country lanes around Eye, where he covers up to 15 miles a day.

He has made a full recovery after falling off his bike and breaking his hip three years ago, although he still has a plate and pins in the joint.

Mr Bassett works as a volunteer three days a week in the Thornham Walled Garden, near Eye, and also works two days a week gardening in Stowmarket.

His brother, William, 13, who rides a three-wheeler bicycle, also emerged from the Special Olympics heat with some medals.

The two brothers suffer from the rare Worcester drought syndrome, a form of cerebral palsy, and their mother said: "We're very proud of them both."
