A PEDESTRIAN was killed last night when he was struck by a car on the eastbound carriageway of the A14.

The fatal accident happened at around 9.40pm in Woolpit, near Bury St Edmunds, and the male victim, thought to be his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man, who was believed to have been in the middle of the road, was struck by a black Mercedes and was killed instantly. The driver of the car was treated for shock and taken to West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds.

A female driver was also being treated in hospital last night for leg injuries after her car hit the back of the Mercedes following the first accident, close to the junction with the A1088.

Two ambulances, plus a rapid response vehicle and a doctor from the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service arrived at the scene of the accident at around 9.45pm.

Police closed a section of the eastbound carriageway of the A14 following the accident as officers launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Last night, Insp Graham Underwood, of Suffolk Constabulary, said the victim had not yet been identified and added it was unclear whether the man had just been walking along the road or had got out of a nearby car.
