A PENSIONER caused chaos at a Norfolk filling station when he smashed through the doors of a car showroom, writing off a Rolls Royce and damaging the building.

The 84-year-old was in the car with his wife when the accident happened on the forecourt of A and F Motors in Middletons Lane, Hellesdon.

Firefighters, police officers and an ambulance crew were all called to the scene, but despite the damage, there were no serious injuries although the couple, who have not been named, were very shaken by what happened.

They were given first aid at the scene by firefighters and paramedics after the accident at 1.15pm yesterday.

Mark Allen, co-owner of A and F Motors, said the man was either just about to pull up for petrol or was pulling away from the pump when the accident happened.

"He got in a muddle and got his foot stuck on the accelerator. He went shooting across the forecourt and went straight into the patio doors," said Mr Allen.

"So he's gone through that and parked inside is a Rolls Royce. He goes through the doors, through the Rolls Royce and shunts it back into the showroom, knocking a hole through the stairwell.

"We've had the structural engineer come out and RG Carters the builders to shore things up.

"Fortunately no one was seriously injured and no one was downstairs. And fortunately it's not really used as a showroom — it's vacant at the moment — so it's not going to affect any business."

But the Rolls Royce was severely damaged in the accident, with both sides of the car caving in as it was hit.

Mr Allen added: "We used to use it to do weddings, although we haven't done any for a couple of years. It's scrap metal now I suppose."

PC Mark Bandrowski, spokesman for Norwich police, said: "The gentleman who went into the premises was taken to hospital for examination and has been since released.

"I believe there is going to be no further action taken regarding this, although a request has been made to DVLA to revoke his licence due to his age."
