A photography festival which aims to build Suffolk’s reputation as a “centre for excellence in photography” is returning next year.

PhotoEast, a biennial event, displays contemporary work by leading and local artists at “unconventional locations” and gallery spaces along Ipswich Waterfront. It launched in 2016 and will run from May 24 to June 24 next year.

Initial funding been provided by Arts Council England, organisers PhotoEast and the University of Suffolk said.

Emma Bowkett, picture editor of the Financial Times, will guest curate the festival and the full programme of exhibitions, talks and events.

A spokesman said: “It is part of a wider ambition to build Suffolk’s reputation as a centre for excellence in photography.”

A new PhotoEast Young Person’s Fellowship Programme for photography students aged 16-19 in Suffolk and Norfolk has also been launched.

Four successful applicants will be awarded a fellowship, which includes being mentored by photography professionals, including associate professor Mark Edwards and other academic staff from the BA (Hons) Photography degree at the University of Suffolk, gaining industry work experience and exhibiting their work at PhotoEast in May 2018. Aspiring photographers are invited to apply by January 26.

Professor Mohammad Dastbaz, deputy vice-chancellor at the university, said: “We have some very talented young people in the schools and colleges of Suffolk so we are looking forward to seeing them apply for this fantastic opportunity to be mentored by industry experts and academics from the University, and to be part of the festival.

“PhotoEast 2018 promises to be a key event next summer along the Ipswich Waterfront and we are very much looking forward to being involved once again.”
