Concerns have been raised by members of the public about the welfare of baby fish which were found living in a spillway in Alton Water.

Alton Water is already home to a number of fish species including roach and carp and permits can be bought for fishing at the site.

These young fish, thought to be pike, were found away from the main lake in the area known as the spillway which helps to drain surplus water.

Residents say that the water levels in which the pike are living are dropping and they are concerned that they will not be able to continue much longer in the space.

One man said: “These fish are going to die.”

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “We are working closely with the Environment Agency to monitor the health and wellbeing of the fish in the soak away at Alton Water.

“Currently the Environment Agency are happy with their condition and location, but should the situation change, we will take action as necessary.”

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency added: “We attended Alton Water yesterday and met Anglian Water staff on site.

“The fish are currently isolated, but not in distress and there is sufficient water to support them.

“They are in a large section of the spillway, which takes water from the reservoir at times of high flow.

“Anglian Water are prepared to pump water in there should levels drop.”
