An inquiry into controversial plans to build 300 homes in Bell Lane, Kesgrave, gets underway after weeks of delays.

In February, Suffolk Coastal District Council’s planning committee rejected an application for 300 homes on land to the south of Long Strops, because of concerns over traffic and already oversubscribed GPs and schools.

The committee suggested that a larger of development of 1,000 homes could help provide the amenities the area would need.

A public meeting chaired by Kesgrave Town Council was held in January 2016, where questions were raised over the area’s traffic provision among other issues.

The town council formally objected to the proposals following the meeting.

Developer Persimmon appealed the decision, which has been called in for review by the Planning Inspectorate.

The four-day inquiry was due to begin in April, but was delayed after both Suffolk Coastal and the developers agreed a further report on Suffolk’s housing was needed.

The inquiry was rescheduled for June but was delayed once again.

Now, the inquiry is due to start at East Suffolk House today.

The inquiry will hear representations on behalf of both the developer and Suffolk Coastal, with a site visit on Friday also part of the proceedings.

The Planning Inspectorate will then make a decision on whether the scheme should go ahead.

In January Persimmon said it may submit a fresh proposal while the appeal is underway, although no new application has currently been submitted.
