Plans submitted for seventh Greggs store in Ipswich

Fresh concerns have been raised by independent businesses in Ipswich after plans were unveiled for a new Greggs to be built in Ipswich – the seventh in the town.
A planning application was submitted to Ipswich Borough Council by the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society to build a ‘pod unit’ in the Futura Park car park.
A transport statement in the planning documents confirmed the space will be occupied by Greggs, which will be the seventh in Ipswich including the Martlesham store.
But local bakeries have expressed concerns over whether that many store by one national chain is healthy for competition, and believe more should be done to support independent firms.
The family-run Victoria’s Bakery raised questions last year when a new Greggs was allowed to be established just metres from outside its Felixstowe Road store, with the Futura Park one also likely to impact on business.
Victoria Haddoch, 38, a supervisor for the family-firm, said: “It is quite a concern – especially as it’s hard enough as it is. If they open one at Ransomes it is going to affect us whatever.
“Healthy competition is alright, but I am not sure it is healthy, especially that many in such a small radius.”
Victoria’s reported that some of its customers went to Greggs when it opened, but many have drifted back because people like to support local firms, and appreciate the personal service they get.
But Mrs Haddoch says she would like more to be done to support independent firms.
“There won’t be any of us left if it carries on – there won’t be any little family businesses anymore.
“We have to up our game and we have to think of something different, but we are never going to be able to compete,” she added.
The plans are still in the consultation phase where public support or objections can be lodged, and is due to go before planners at the end of March or the beginning of April.
If approved, it is not yet clear when work may start.
A Greggs spokeswoman was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
Similar concerns were raised by independent coffee shops when Costa announced a new store for Ransomes, just metres away from its existing one in Futura Park.
