The victim was discovered lying on a footpath which runs between Ladbrook Drive and Jackson Walk in Colchester at about 1am on Saturday morning.
The 49-year-old local man was transferred to Queens Hospital in Romford with serious head injuries where he was yesterday in a critical but stable condition.
Essex police said that a 35-year-old local man had been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
