OUTSTANDING acts of bravery and dedication, including have been recognised by Suffolk Constabulary.

More than 20 police officers, staff and members of the public were presented with awards at a ceremony yesterday.

Pc Daniel Ormesreceived a Chief Constable's Commendation in recognition of the calm and professional manner in which he helped to save the life of a suicidal man in August last year.

The man, known to be suffering from mental illness, was on Ipswich's Orwell Bridge and was intent on taking his own life by jumping off the bridge.

Pc Ormes approached and talked to the man before managing to get close enough to pull him from the bridge parapet and save his life. This was done despite the dangers to his own life.

Speaking after receiving his commendation at Suffolk police's Martlesham Heath headquarters, Pc Ormes said: “With something like that you just deal with it at the time and do what you think is best. It is only afterwards where you perhaps reflect a little bit more about what happened.

“Being a police officer you get lots of different jobs and everyone is different and you have to think on your feet. Every police officer's job is to save life and limb and that is the main priority. I do not think anyone else would have done anything different.”

Also receiving a Chief Constable's Commendation was Det Insp Stuart McCallum, in recognition of his role as Senior Investigating Officer following the murder of four-week old Luigi Askew in May 2007.

Det Insp McCallum was recognised for his professional approach, and that of his team, in support of the family. This led to the baby's father, Duncan Mills, being sent to prison for life.

Pc Tony Russell and police dog Yogiwon the AceroonTrophy for 2008. The pair attended numerous incidents in the past 12 months, securing the arrest and conviction of many offenders who would not have been detained without their ability.

Pc Russell said: “I feel very honoured. We have been very successful all year and the results we have had have been good enough to receive this award. If Yogi wants to tell me something he manages to do it in his own way. He tells me that something is not as right as it should be.”
