A POLICE car smashed into a telegraph pole in an Ipswich street.

The crash happened in Woodbridge Road about 5pm on Saturday when several police cars and an ambulance were seen by eye-witness Andrew Purnell as they travelled around the one-way system near the Regent.

He said: “One police car sped up and went to pull into a car park opposite but for some reason didn't turn enough and didn't slow down and smashed into the wall.

“It was very confusing as it's not a difficult car park to get into.”

A spokeswoman for Suffolk police said that the officer was not on the way to a 999 call and had radioed the force control room to report that he had hit a telegraph pole.

The spokeswoman said no one was injured in the crash and it was not clear from police logs exactly what had happened but the incident had not been passed on to a higher authority to investigate.
