Six men were arrested last night when police foiled a raid on a jewellery store in Chelmsford.
The six men on scooters, carrying sledgehammers and chainsaws, attempted to break in to Goldsmiths jewellers on the High Street at about 11.30pm.
Having failed to break in to the store they made their getaway on the scooters, dumping two of the machines and loading the third onto a waiting Transit van nearby.
Five were arrested by police while a sixth attempted to escape by jumping into the River Chelmer. He too was later arrested.
A police spokesman last night credited CCTV in helping them catch the raiders.
