The 33-year-old was on his way home, walking in Church Lane, Walton, when he was attacked by the robber - a man of Oriental appearance who demanded he hand over his wallet.
Before he had a chance to reply, he was assaulted by the man who hit him over the head with an unknown implement.
The man tried to protect himself but the offender stole his mobile phone and ran off towards Gulpher Road.
The victim made his way home and alerted police. He was later treated in hospital for a three-inch cut to his head.
