POLICE are investigating today after a 24-year-old woman from Suffolk was raped in her bedroom in the early hours.

The rapist waited for her to unlock her door before coming up behind her and forcing his way into her Mildenhall flat on the College Heath Estate.

Once inside the man, who had a shaved head and smelt strongly of body odour, pushed the woman into the bedroom where he raped her.

The attack took place yesterday, minutes after she left a friend to walk after a night out in the town to walk home.

Today the woman is being cared for by relatives after what police described as a "terrifying ordeal".

A team of 12 officers is working on the case. The number is set to increase in order to carry out house to house enquiries in the area.

Police have assured women in the area that stranger rape is rare.

Detective Inspector Rick Munns said: "I am anxious to hear from anyone who may have seen someone of a similar description in the area or in the town last night."

An incident room has been set up at Mildenhall police station to deal with the incident. Anyone with information should contact officers on 01284 774111
