THREE 13-year-olds are today being questioned by police following a fire close to Ipswich museum.

Smoke was seen billowing from the windows of the former Suffolk College annexe next to the museum in St George's Street near to the town centre.

The blaze was one of a series of fires that kept Ipswich crews busy throughout last night and into the early hours of the New Year.

Two fire crews from Colchester Road headquarters and Princes Street were sent to tackle the blaze, which took almost an hour to put out.

The blaze was spotted at around 4.30pm yesterday and crews arrived to find the huge building heavily smoke logged.

They eventually tracked the source of the fire to a toilet in the building and managed to bring it under control by around 5.20pm. Nobody was hurt during the incident.

Three youngsters were spotted at the scene and Suffolk Police have confirmed that the 13-year-olds are helping them with their enquiries in connection with the fire.

During the night crews were also kept busy with a number of car fires.

The first was near Stoke Bridge at around 10.20pm in Kenyon Street.

Fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus took around ten minutes to get the fire under control.

Just into the New Year at 12.45am crews were called out to a car park at Saxmundham Railway Station to find a pile of rubbish on fire. The blaze was under control by 12.54am.

Another call was received in the early hours of this morning in the Hadleigh Road area of Ipswich.

One fire crew attended the scene at around 4.20am and had put out the fire, while wearing breathing apparatus, by 4.30am.
