EMERGENCY services battled for nearly an hour to talk a suspected suicide jumper off a bridge spanning the A14 near Felixstowe after the man was spotted perched on the wrong side of the railings.

EMERGENCY services battled for nearly an hour to talk a suspected suicide jumper off a bridge spanning the A14 near Felixstowe after the man was spotted perched on the wrong side of the railings.

The Dock Spur road beneath the footbridge at Trimley St Mary was closed and police, fire and ambulance crews stood by as two police officers spoke with the man for about 45 minutes yesterday.

Fire crews were also on hand with a huge canvas blanket ready to break his fall.

He eventually climbed down shortly after 7pm.

In the early stages of the incident both lanes of the Ipswich bound carriageway were closed, causing some tailbacks.

However those close to the scene later realised a pole on the bridge would prevent the man falling into the outside lane and that carriageway was then opened, allowing traffic to pass beneath the tense drama overhead.

An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, a fire engine and a turntable ladder were at the scene for the duration of the incident.
