DETECTIVES today confirmed an alleged Ipswich town centre rape did not happen.

A 21-year-old woman reported the sexual attack on February 21 - but officers have concluded their investigation and found no criminal activity took place.

A force spokesman said: “A number of key witnesses responded to the media appeals and were able to provide valuable information, which supported CCTV and other lines of enquiry to conclude that no criminal activity had taken place.”

Detective chief inspector Mark Jepson, who led this investigation, said: “Rape allegations involve complex enquiries.

“We have a duty to investigate allegations of crimes and had to be 100 per cent sure that no offences had occurred. “On this occasion the female wasn't sure if an offence had occurred but is now very reassured that she was not subjected to an attack.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public and the media for their assistance in this enquiry.”
