SHOPPERS and clubbers were today warned to keep a close eye on their property when out and about following a number of purse thefts in Ipswich.

In a number of the instances, victims were unaware that they had been targeted until they went to pay and found their purse or wallet missing.

Some reported being bumped into or jostled before finding their property stolen.

Peter Lickert, Ipswich senior crime reduction officer, said: “Try to keep the content of your bag to a minimum and only carry as much cash as you need.

“There is a lot of personal information in a handbag, as well as credit cards and car and house keys.

“Shoppers are easily distracted when trying on clothes or looking after children, especially during this busy sale season.

“Remember to keep your bag with you at all times, preferably over your shoulder and across your body and don't leave it unattended or in a shopping trolley or pushchair.”
