A FELIXSTOWE port worker is banned from the road today after drink-driving with no insurance.

Mindaugas Mickevicius, of Holland Road, Felixstowe, was more than twice the legal alcohol limit when he was caught by police.

Officers became suspicious when they saw his BMW 5 Series swerving along Felixstowe Road and the A14 at around midnight on December 6.

Lesla Small, prosecuting at South East Suffolk Magistrates' Court yesterday, said: “The officers saw the vehicle straddle the white lines on the dual carriageway.

“It turned onto the A14 and proceeded to swerve from side to side.”

They followed the car when it turned off a slip near Trimley St Mary and saw it indicate right before turning left.

When Mickevicius was pulled over, he smelt of booze and gave a breath test reading of 98microgrammes of alcohol per 100mililitres of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

The 29-year-old, who had a Lithuanian driving licence, was later discovered to have no insurance.

Speaking through an interpreter, Mickevicius said he had lived in Britain for two years and worked at the Port of Felixstowe loading containers.

Magistrates fined Mickevicius £400 and told him to pay £65 in court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Mickevicius was disqualified from driving for two years and he said he did not want to take a drink-drivers' rehabilitation course, which would have reduced his ban.
