CHAOS hit motorists in Ipswich again after an accident and emergency roadworks left rush hour roads jammed.

Motorists on the A14 near Ipswich faced delays yesterday after a stretch of the carriageway was closed for emergency repairs when a huge pothole appeared in the road.

The Bury bound stretch near the B1113 in Claydon was closed from 8pm for around nine hours to repair the hole which had mysteriously appeared.

Motorists were diverted off the A14 at the exit slip road and were able to rejoin the road a few hundred yards on via the entry slip road.

Some tailbacks were reported as a result of the diversion.

A police spokeswoman said it is not clear what caused the pothole to appear.

Meanwhile hundreds of other motorists faced delays last night due to an accident and other roadworks.

Two cars collided on the Copdock roundabout, which links the A12 and A14, at around 4.15pm yesterday afternoon.

A police spokesman said nobody was injured as a result of the accident however traffic backed up as a result of the smash.

Elsewhere people leaving Ipswich by car along Wherstead Road faced heavy traffic as a result of more roadworks.
