BLOCKBUSTER movie Harry Potter went on sale in Ipswich this morning – but there were no long queues as people shopped around for the best price.

The video and DVD of the adapted JK Rowling book hit the shelves at midnight in London with around 250 people packing into the West End store of HMV.

Countrywide sales of more than one million expected on the first day alone.

Toni Preece, 31, from Eltham, south east London, received a presentation plaque after she queued for 15 hours to become the first person in Britain to purchase the video and DVD.

In Ipswich, people were queuing for nearer 15 seconds – with most stores busy with parents and children.

WHSmith, who opened at 7.30am, reported a steady stream of people buying the film at a rate of one copy every six minutes.

Supervisor Richard Quinn said: "There were about six or seven people in here in the first hour picking up pre-orders. Everyone who pre-ordered gets a free mug and anybody buying it today will receive a free poster."

By 10am, Mr Quinn said they had sold between 30 and 40 copies so far with one person snapping up three copies.

"We expect it to be busier this afternoon – but as well as Harry Potter, we're also taking orders for Lord Of The Rings and Monsters Inc."

With a recommended retail price of £22.99, stores all over town were selling the DVD and video at different prices.

At Dixons, where a DVD copy is £12.99 - £6 cheaper than other high street stores, they said that by 10am they had sold around 12 copies.

All of Tesco's 24-hour shops and 58 Asda superstores also started selling the

video and DVD at midnight.
