Top musicians who have worked alongside the likes of The Libertines and Linkin Park will be bringing their skills to Ipswich for the launch of a new rock school.

The Rock Project Ipswich will run every Monday at Foxhall Community Centre, providing top music tuition and the chance for people to form bands, as part of an innovation to get youngsters involved in music.

Students can learn how to play bass, guitar, drums or sing – with broader aims to help develop confidence, creative skills and social skills to teenagers and children, alongside the musical skills.

A line up of gigging musicians have been put in place including drum tutor Ashley Howard, who has worked with Linkin Park and The Libertines, and bass tutor Tom McCarthy who is touring the UK with Adrian Buchanon and the Cult Classics.

The project has also enlisted local talent with Punch Studios engineer and Kamara guitarist Gavin Macinally teaching guitar.

Founder David Brown said: “I’m priding myself in the fact that all of the tutors work on the live circuit.

“They’re not accountants by day and musicians in the evening, but all full-time performers who have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share.”

Each Monday, separate sessions for those aged seven to 11, 11-18 and adults will take place, with an hour dedicated to music tuition before the second hour is spent honing their craft in bands.

Mr Brown said the structure, which is already used by the Rock Project’s other 50 franchises across the country, helps develop students.

“Thanks to the performance aspect and the fact that everyone gets the chance to play in a band every week, students develop self-confidence as well as musical skills,” he said. “People learn better when they are having fun, so our focus is to always make the sessions as informative and as enjoyable as possible every step of the way,” he added. The junior session for seven to 11 year olds runs from 4.15pm to 6.15pm, seniors (11-18 year olds) from 6.30-8.30pm and encore sessions for adults are from 8.45-10.15pm. Instruments can be provided by the school.
