Sea Road, Felixstowe was built during the Victorian period and more buildings were added during the Edwardian era, as the town expanded along towards Landguard Point.
In this weeks Days Gone By I have revisited some of the buildings featured in photographs taken in the early years of the 20th century.
The now closed, and rather sad looking, former North Sea Hotel, closed in the 1990s. It was once the Melrose Hotel and a photograph, which appears to be from the 1920s, shows staff and customers posing outside for a photograph.
The nearby Marlborough Hotel was a row of houses with balconies and individual front gates. Also featured this week are reader’s memories of photographs featured in recent Days Gone By.
A photograph of the Sproughton Football team, submitted by Kelvin Dakin, was published in a recent Days Gone By and readers have added names.
George Studd emailed in and said: The photo of Sproughton football team 1950/51 includes my father Dennis Mee (in the suit). He was secretary of the club for a long time and was involved as president until his death in 2001. I am not sure of the faces, but I know the Gardiner, Lawrence and Thorpe brothers were likely to feature in the line-up. Sproughton Football Club (now known as Sproughton Sports) were formed in 1914 and we celebrated our
centenary in 2014, when we played two matches against teams from the 1990s and 2000s. I am still the long serving (and long suffering) secretary of the football club, although living in the next village. We have several old photos displayed at the club if anyone is interested.
David Ling emailed in and said: My grandad, Dennis Mee, is in the back row (right). He was one of the founders of the Sports Club and was still active in the bowls section up until he passed away in 2001. My Auntie, Georgina Studd , is still involved in the club today, having been secretary for many years.
Don Messenger said: I am in the centre of the front row and Ken Thorpe is third from the left in the back row.
