A WEBSITE has been launched to gauge public opinion on the affects of a new nuclear power station at Sizewell.

The government is currently reviewing the need to build further nuclear power stations and these are likely to be on existing sites, where less public opposition is likely and the necessary skill-base is already available.

Sizewell is one of the locations under consideration and people in Suffolk are now being asked on their views on the proposal.

Martlesham based company 2Cs Consult has created a website where residents and workers in the county can log on and make their views known.

Bob Woolliams, managing director of 2Cs, said: “Whether we have another nuclear power station in Suffolk is a decision everyone in the county should be part of - we hope that as many people as possible will get involved in the debate via the website.”

Of the country's 12 nuclear power stations, only three will still be operating in 2020, one of which will be Sizewell B, set to shut down by 2035.

Currently nuclear power provides one-fifth of the country's electricity but there are concerns about waste and the cost of building new power stations

A new nuclear programme would take at least ten years to generate its first power - five years in planning and five in construction.

2Cs' website, www.nucleardebate.co.uk, aims to prevent the facts about nuclear power to the people of the county and allow them to log their opinions.

The feedback received via the website will be presented to local and central government to demonstrate Suffolk's view.

2Cs hope that as many Suffolk residents as possible will take part in the debate to help make the county's view heard when decisions on Sizewell are made.
