A SPECTACULAR 85kg pumpkin took top honours at a special event to raise money for the Ipswich Children's Hospice.

Robert McNay, of Jasmine Close, Ipswich was the proud winner of the competition at the annual Ipswich Allotment Holders Association show that was aiming to raise more than £3,000.

The event, at Ransomes Sports Club at the weekend, was sponsored by the Norwich and Peterborough building society which has pledged to match any donations.

Celebrity gardener Bob Flowerdew was on hand to show his support, raising more money answering questions and charging a pound for his expert advice.

Organiser Peggy Ayres said: “The event was very well supported, everyone enjoyed Bob Flowerdew being there, and there was a lovely, friendly, happy atmosphere.”

Prizes on the day were awarded for the heaviest pumpkin, the heaviest pumpkin grown by a child and the prettiest pumpkin.
