LIVELY lessons and assemblies with a Latin American theme have been helping youngsters learn about the plight of the street children in Guatemala.

A worker from Christian charity Toybox has been spending the week working at schools in Felixstowe and Trimley to make pupils aware of the suffering and hardship faced by children who are not so lucky to live life as they do.

In Guatemala City many children live alone in shanty towns with no toys, few clothes, and scavenge on the city's rubbish dump for food.

Teams from Toybox work on the streets looking for homeless children, and also run a hostel to provide a chance for them to sleep in a secure environment, and a day centre.

Some are rescued completely from their lives on the streets and found loving new homes.

Head of outreach for Toybox, Angela Murray has taken lessons and assemblies at Grange Primary, Causton Junior and Trimley St Mary Primary, and also at Deben and Orwell high schools, where she joined the Christian unions Fish on Friday and Gap for their meetings.

"I'm hoping that this week will have given everyone involved a greater awareness of children living on the streets and in extreme poverty in Latin American and that we can all make a difference," she said.

Youngsters at the town's Cavendish Community Church are already making a difference to the street children – and have raised £5,000 from sponsored events for the work taking place in Guatemala.

They are now raising an extra £500 so some of them can go to South America to see how the money will be spent and work on the project.
