RAIL services between East Anglia and London were thrown into chaos today after a total signalling and points failure in the Witham area.

Trains in both directions were brought to a halt – as engineers struggled to sort out the problem.

Among those affected by the chaos was Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith, who was due to join his party's by-election effort.

He was due in town by 9am – but at that time was still stuck in a queue of trains south of Witham.

Anglia Railways' spokesman Peter Meades said the cause of the failure was not immediately clear, but it was a "major incident" being investigated by Railtrack engineers.

"We don't know what the cause is – but it's track and signalling rather than a train breakdown," he said.
