HUNDREDS of rail passengers were left stranded today at Ipswich rail station with trains arriving up to 45 minutes late and in one case, not arriving at all.

At first the problems on the Norwich to Liverpool Street line were put down to flooding but it transpired later that the delays had been caused by a freight train breaking down near Manningtree.

The 09.02 service from Ipswich to Norwich was delayed by 40 minutes as was the 09.39 service running along the same route.

Every service arriving from Liverpool Street, Norwich, Cambridge, Felixstowe and Peterborough was also delayed and a First Great Eastern service between Ipswich and Liverpool Street due to run at 09.20 hours was eventually cancelled.
