NUCLEAR power? Yes please!

That's the overwhelming verdict of hundreds of Evening Star readers who have today been taking part in an online webpoll.

The supporters of proposals to build a new nuclear plant at Sizewell so far outnumber the opponents by almost three to one - suggesting that readers see the construction of a new power station on the Suffolk coast as beneficial for the environment and the economy.

Last week the prime minister signalled that the government was likely to press ahead with a new generation of nuclear power plants.

He said the country could not afford to become too dependent on imported gas from counties like Russia, and that renewable energy sources would not be able to fill the gap that opens when existing nuclear plants are decommissioned.

If a new phase of nuclear plants is built, Sizewell C is expected to be one of the first to be built. Proposals were already drawn up before a nuclear moratorium was introduced in 1989 - and the land and infrastructure is already available.
