MALCOLM Smith, of Kesgrave, has sent me photographs from his father's collection of pictures featuring Ipswich Dock.

Malcolm said: “My late father John, who lived all his married life in Trafalgar Close, Ipswich, began his working life aged 15 at J O Whitmore's ship chandlers and sail makers on Neptune Quay.

“I was sorry to hear that the building is now being demolished taking with it the memories of one of the last original buildings at the dock”.

“My father worked at Whitmore's after leaving Landseer School in 1951 until going into National Service between 1954 and 56. “Later during his career he worked at Cliff Quay Power Station and then as a docker. He died in 2001.

“He was a keen photographer and took many photographs of barges and scenes round the dock while it was still busy as a port”
