Rail commuters will be breathing a sigh of relief after it was announced a full train service on the Great Eastern Main Line will resume from Monday following a week of disruption.

Engineers are scheduled to install a new piece of track overnight this weekend after a crack was discovered on the approach to Liverpool Street station last Sunday.

Two platforms at the London station were forced to close and this affected a number of peak Greater Anglia services to and from the capital.

The section of track is specially made to fit a curve on the approach to Liverpool Street and Network Rail said the crack was too big to repair – meaning a replacement part was required.

Passengers took to social media to make their feelings known about the delays and cancellations to services.

Steve Hooker, Network Rail’s head of maintenance for Anglia, said: “I understand that some passengers will have had some difficult journeys over the last few days and I’d like to apologise to those who have been affected.

“We have worked as quickly as possible to build a new piece of track so that services can return to normal. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience during this time.”

Jamie Burles, Greater Anglia managing director, thanked passengers who have been affected during the week.

“I’d like to thank our customers for their patience this week,” he said. “We have been trying hard to make sure that all customers have been able to get to their destination by train, but we’re sorry that trains were fuller than usual and that there were some delays and cancellations.

“Liverpool Street is such a busy station, it’s not possible to run all trains in the rush hour as normal when two platforms are closed.

“We drafted in extra help at affected stations to help customers catch their right train to try to make things a little easier for customers.”

Saturday services will run as scheduled but there may be some changes to morning services on Sunday.

Passengers are asked to check before travelling via www.greateranglia.co.uk, the Greater Anglia app, @greateranglia on Twitter, or www.nationalrail.co.uk
