SUFFOLK celebrity horse Remus celebrates his 28th birthday this week -and he is thought to be the oldest Suffolk Punch anywhere in the world.

Remus, who is living out his retirement at the Museum of East Anglian Life's 70-acre site in Stowmarket, has been there since the early 1980s when he was brought in to demonstrate historic ploughing techniques and pull carts laden with visitors around the 70-acre site.

Tony Butler, museum director, said: “He's a symbol of the museum and Stowmarket and several generations of visitors come here just to see him.

“He is now enjoying a gentle retirement. To celebrate the day the museum is holding a special birthday party with a carrot cake prepared by the museum's catering operators the Galloping Chef.

“He looks in good condition, his coat is shiny and while it might take him a bit longer to get up to his paddock from the stables, when he's there he trots about quite gaily.”

n At 2pm on Remus' birthday this Friday a short ceremony will be held in the Home Close area of the museum, near to the entrance.
