A MODERN pavilion in Woodbridge could turn into a ''white elephant'' and be abandoned by sports users after the owners decided to impose a £3,500 rent.

The town council has rejected a request to decrease the rent for the pavilion on Kingston playing fields from £3,500 to £500. The council decided to impose a rent for the first time this year after it had omitted asking for a rent since 1997.

Opened in 1994, the pavillion was used rent free for the first three years and the council should have started collecting a rent from 1997. It has decided not to backdate the rent but councillors are adamant that the annual fee of £3,500 must be paid.

However, Woodbridge Tennis Club will not discuss the request until the annual general meeting in March and acting vice-chairman Mike Hudson warned that the club could decide to abandon the pavilion.

The club already has to pay 82.5 per cent of the annual £3,500 maintenance fee – the town's junior football club pays the rest – and Mr Hudson said the club did not want to pay such a large rent as well.

Mr Hudson said: ''We are not going to pay £3,500 rent and £3,500 maintenance costs, it is not worth it. If the council thinks that they have people queuing up to use the pavilion then they will find other people to use it. We will not be bulldozed into something we can not afford.''
