A MAN who was rescued from a mud bank by a member of a public this morning has been arrested on suspicion of assault.

The 25-year-old man, from Ipswich, and another man were pulled to safety with a rope by two passers-by this morning after they got stuck in mud beside the Orwell River.

Police were called to Burrell Road at 1.19am, and arrested one of the men on suspicion of assault, and having a bladed weapon in a public place. He is in custody in Ipswich police station.

The coastguard was originally called to rescue the men, who were stranded near the car park of the old Zest nightclub, but turned round after the members of the public stepped in to help.

It is not known how the men got onto the mud.
