A RESERVOIR with 30 million gallons of water which critics claim will spoil beautiful views of the Suffolk coast, is to be built.

Residents living at Sudbourne, near Woodbridge, have complained the reservoir for Sutton Hoo Produce will block views and the ''stark geometry'' of the reservoir is ''grossly incongruous and dramatically damaging to the landscape".

Householders living close to Captain's Wood, Lambert's Lane, claimed it would hide views of Lambert's Wood, Orford Castle, the church and the North Sea.

They also fear the reservoir embankments could block light from their properties, and the noise of generators and pumps.

Government advice is that planners should react favourably to plans for on-farm reservoirs. Farmers are also being encouraged by the Environment Agency to store surplus winter water.

Suffolk Coastal's development control sub-committee has supported the scheme, although some details need to be negotiated before final approval is given.

Neither the Environment Agency or English Nature have identified any problems with the plan.
