YOUNG vandals who constantly smash roof tiles at a vet's surgery could be in for a shock.

For officials have decided it is time to get tough on the teenagers who have wrecked the roof of the Orwell Veterinary Group, in Kesgrave, and are offering a cash reward for information leading to the prosecution of the culprits.

A huge hole has appeared in the roof of the vet's practice from where youngsters playing football have constantly kicked the ball on to the tiles and now £100 is being offered to the person who is prepared to name and shame.

Although there are several play areas in Kesgrave, Oak Meadow even has a kick- wall, as well as the Community Centre, a gang often gathers around the Rupert Fison Centre to have a kick-about.

Community policeman, Nick Day, has already confiscated several footballs and asked the youngsters not to play there.

But now the town council have got to the end of their tether and decided that action has to be taken.

Charles Bagnall, one of the partners of the Orwell Veterinary Group, is also contributing to the reward and said that he hopes it might deter the culprits from doing any more damage.

During the high winds in the last few days, Mr Bagnall said he had been able to hear tiles moving on the roof and was concerned that they might get blown off.

The roof, which is the responsibility of Tesco, has already been repaired twice but the damage keeps occurring.

Mr Bagnall said the noise of the football was also disrupting his surgeries because the constant banging is frightening the sick animals.

He said: "Generally we don't mind if they just want to kick the ball against the wall when we have all gone. But it is irritating when they keep making such a noise when we are there and the fact that they keep breaking the roof."

Other shop owners in the area have also experienced problems with youngsters running across their roofs.

The Rupert Fison Health Centre has also been the target of vandals who have broken fences and lit fires in brick rubbish sheds.
