A BODY found on the A12 at Capel St Mary is believed to be that of a woman, police revealed today.

Investigations are continuing after the macabre discovery was made by members of the public at around 9.45pm yesterday.

Detectives from Suffolk police, who are appealing for witnesses, are currently treating the death as “unexplained”.

However, it is understood that consideration is being given to the possibility the woman took her own life.

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out later today, while her next-of- kin will be informed when formal identification has taken place.

Early indications suggest the woman was from the Essex area.

The body, which was severely injured, was in the London-bound carriageway when it was found.

Paramedics arrived at 9.54pm and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

A blue Peugeot 406, which police believe belonged to the woman, was recovered from a nearby lay-by for examination soon after.

The London-bound carriageway was closed from the Copdock interchange to East Bergholt until 5am today.

Meanwhile, the lay-by at Capel St Mary was expected to be closed well into this afternoon and has been cordoned off while police scenes of crimes officers scour the area.

A force spokesman said investigating officers had already received a handful of calls from witnesses, but urged anyone else with information to contact them. Any drivers who were on the A12 in the Capel St Mary area before 9.45pm, or who may have information are being asked to call 01473 613500.
