St Nicholas Street in Ipswich town centre is likely to be closed to traffic for several days after a sewer collapsed under the carriageway.

The collapse happened at about 9am on Friday morning, prompting an inspection from Kier engineers on behalf of Suffolk County Council.

They have called in engineers from Anglian Water – and it is hoped that the road will be reopened by Monday.

St Nicholas Street is normally one-way, but during the closure these restrictions will be eased to allow access to affected properties from either end of the road.

Traffic will be diverted along Friar’s Street and Prince’s Street during the road closure.
