GRITTERS will be hitting the roads this evening in preparation for forecasted icy conditions overnight and tomorrow morning.

All priority one routes, which include A and B roads, will be covered starting at 6pm today and again at 4.30am tomorrow.

All priority two routes will be gritted at 4.30am tomorrow.

Suffolk County Council are reminding drivers that just because roads are gritted does not guarantee that they will be ice-free so precautions should still be taken.

Drivers should listen to weather forecasts before setting out on journeys, and allow extra time.

Reducing speed and allowing more time to stop will greatly decrease the chance of accidents.

Main roads should be used as much as possible as these are most likely to have been salted.

It is also important to use a high gear and avoid harsh acceleration, hard braking or sudden steering movements, and to be seen while avoiding use of main beam headlights which can dazzle other motorists.

If conditions are severe, consideration should be given as to whether a journey is really necessary or whether it can be delayed.
