LYNN and Colin Buttle are defying robbers so newspaper suppliers are unlikely to get in their way.

The brave couple are determined to re-open the Little Stonham post office and shop despite it being hit twice by robbers in November.

But they face a challenge to resurrect newspaper deliveries after being hit with a whopping bill from distribution firm John Menzies.

The Buttles have been told reinstating the service would cost a £1,000 deposit and a guaranteed weekly sale of £270.

Mrs Buttle said: "This makes no sense at all. Last year the raiders tried to kill us and our business and now we're getting it again.

"All we are trying to do is run a business by setting up an amenity for the community and are being hit again before we even start."

The Buttle's daughter Sarah was driven out of the area by the trauma of the robberies.

But her parents are determined to open their doors to the public again.

Mrs Buttle said: "This time last year it was a straightforward sale or return of papers and we paid for what was sold, returning the rest.

"Adjustments were made to the numbers we were sent depending on what was sold the previous day.

"But we won't be beaten. The Post Office will hopefully be open before Christmas and the shop will be open before that, as planned.

Mrs Buttle also said when the family first took on the post office and stores in 1998 they paid £250 deposit to Menzies which was not refunded because they did not end the contract, just asked for it to be left as no deliveries until further notice.

Mrs Buttle said: "We have been looking into alternative ways of being able to provide a newspaper service for our neighbours and passing trade. And it will be business as planned," she said.

John Menzies declined to comment.
