Rogue trader alert after pensioner is asked for 5,000
BANK staff raised the alarm after a pensioner asked to withdraw 5,000 from his account to pay for work on his driveway.
The 86-year-old was driven to the bank in Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, by people who carried out the work at his home.
Counter staff became supsicious and called the police.
Officers investigating the incident on Wednesday believe it is an example of “rogue trading” where excessive amounts of money are demanded from older or more vulnerable residents for little or no work on their homes.
They are urging residents to be extremely careful when dealing with any unknown callers – whether in person on the doorstep, or on the phone.
“Always get several quotes from reputable companies before agreeing to have any work done and don’t feel pressurised to have work done immediately,” said a police spokeswoman.
