A ROTTWEILER dog guarded an Ipswich shed where drugs were kept, a court heard.

When police raided Darren Gillander's Browning Road home 130 grams of amphetamine sulphate (speed) was discovered in a shed along with his dog.

Gillanders, 30, had been driving in Byron Road when police pulled him over for driving while disqualified. The car was searched and a carrier bag containing 181 grams of speed was found.

The drugs from the car were valued at between £900 and £1800. Police then searched Gillanders' home where the £650 of speed, which was of lower purity, was discovered.

Gillanders told police he was a "custodian" of the drugs for someone else. He pleaded guilty to possessing speed with intent to supply and to driving while disqualified.

Ipswich Crown Court heard that Gillanders had a previous criminal record for dishonesty and public order offences but this was his first drug related conviction.

Judge John Holt sentenced Gillanders to 200 hours community punishment and a six month curfew order, preventing him from leaving his home between 8pm and 5am. His driving disqualification, which was due to expire in October, was extended by a month.
