PROMISING Royal Marine Jacob Thompson's career could be over after he pleaded guilty to assault at South East Suffolk Magistrates Court.

The marine, who served in Afghanistan following the atrocities of September 11, could face expulsion from the marines if his sentence takes him away from duties.

He is due to go back out to Afghanistan next month and any sentence other than a fine could effect his return.

The court heard how Thompson, who is stationed in Somerset, had gone to Liquid in Ipswich for his first night out while on leave. When he entered the club he knocked over an ashtray and was asked to pick it up by the doorman. To which the 23-year-old replied, "I am not a cleaner".

He was then asked to leave the club which he was not happy about.

The manager from the club became involved in the argument and Thompson head butted him. This left him with a bleeding nose.

The court also heard how Thompson faces double jeopardy as he will not only face a criminal prosecution but also disciplinary action from the Royal Marines.

Sentencing has been adjourned until a pre-sentence report has been completed.

Thompson has been released on unconditional bail until March 1.
